Did you ever wonder how the Needham Invitational Memorial Day Tournament
attracts such talented referees and linesman? Read on to learn
more...
After some 30 years, there is a core cadre of referees that we
draw upon. Not unlike many other established events such as this,
most officials have been here before. We even have a few with more
than 25 years of service.
Quite a few have college, adult, & professional game backgrounds;
however, many do so well because they excel at club youth games at
various age levels.
Beyond those, we welcome experienced officials from Massachusetts
and surrounding states, that can realistically participate, at a
mutually congruent level, given time/distance factors. We have
contacts in most areas so as to call on recommendations, check
credentials, service to the game, tournament experience, etc.
All referees must be registered with USSF for the current year of
the tournament or their country entity. All must wear current year
badge, be in good standing with their state/local jurisdictions.
Most of our officials have 10 years service or more. Many have 20
years plus.
We encourage high school /college age referees with high
potential to be part of this experience, if they have the
appropriate experience (recommendations, have competitive level 11 v
11 game counts, enjoy good reputation, etc.) As an added bonus we
award "Young Referee of the Tournament" accolade each year to a high
performing young referee.
We have had referees appear from a dozen states and often 2 or 3
a year from foreign countries. Many have USYSA regional or national
tournament or state cup experience. This does not exclude a number
of less experienced people, of any age, who enjoy solid
recommendations from local admin folks, assignors, etc.
The tournament has grown so we welcome inquiries . We like to
think the mix suits the players and the tournament well. Our aim is
to satisfy the needs of team competition, at a very high standard.
If you or anyone you know want to inquire, we look forward to
hearing from them. Please contact
Ed Rae, Referee Director, Needham Invitational Memorial Day Tournament.
